CORTONA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

CORTONA HISTORICAL CENTER:

Perched on a promontory stands Cortona, one of the most beautiful and well-known Italian villages in the world.
The historic center is enclosed within ancient walls, built between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.
Its main square is Piazza della Repubblica, here is the beautiful Palazzo Comunale dating back to the fourteenth century with its characteristic tower with the clock, a very popular location for weddings.
You can continue towards the Signorelli, seat of the "Etruscan Academy Museum (MAEC)" and the Signorelli theater, characterized by a loggia with seven arches built in the 19th century.
From Piazza Signorelli continue towards Piazza Duomo where the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the "Diocesan Museum" stand majestically, with important works by local artists, such as the Roman sarcophagus and the paintings of Beato Angelico, Luca Signorelli and Pietro Lorenzetti.

At the top of the hill is the Fortress of Girifalco and the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita where the relics of the saint are exhibited.

From here you can admire the extensive panorama of the Valdichiana and a glimpse of Lake Trasimeno which is located in nearby Umbria.
Not to be missed is the excursion to the Eremo le Celle, founded by San Francesco in 1211, a place of silence and prayer.
